However, he’s going there in chains as a prisoner. They did not quit. It is one thing to be a free man on a ship in a storm. Paul was headed to Rome⦠as a prisoner on a ship. The only way we can see the power of God is to stay in the place of peace. And yet something very important is going on. Paul wrote to Timothy, “Therefore, endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (II Timothy 2:3). We think there is nothing we can do, so we stop trying. It is okay to want a trial to go away. There is a time when you have to decide to endure, to suffer through, to stick it out, even when there might be a way out. He was helpless and alone, as no man has ever been alone. And so when we think we are really hurting, when we are in trouble, when we are suffering for the faith, when the whole world is coming down around our ears, when we feel there is nothing left we can do, we can still endure. Greater things – bigger storms – better stories. That which endures, lasts.
